1956 Mercedes-Benz 300 SC |

This is a fine and handsome model of the 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300, although it must have looked dated even in 1956. The Mercedes 300 in my 1957 Observers Book of Automobiles (the first year it was published) is the one we know and love from the early Corgi range, the SL a futuristic, gull wing monster as driven in soft-top form by Grace Kelly in High Society. These different, more traditional, Mercedes-Benz Type 300s were the company's largest and most-prestigious models throughout the 1950s. Analogous to today's S-Class, the Type 300 cars were elegant, powerful, exclusive, and expensive. The 300, 300b, 300c, and successor 300d models were touring cars, often referred to as Adenauers after Konrad Adenauer, the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, in office from 1949 to 1963, who used them as his official car. The 300 SC was an all but handmade sports tourer, the pinnacle of the Mercedes line of their era. It was available in 2+2 coupe, cabriolet, and roadster versions. Corgi released it as an open tourer with the soft top down as No.805 and with the sot top closed as No.806 in April 1983. only a couple of months before the company went into receivership, as part of the 50's Classics range in specially printed boxes. The Great Book of Corgi pocket guide has the open car only in black and the closed car only in metallic red, as you can see below I have had these cars in cream as a closed car and grey/blue as an open car. The car stayed in the post Mettoy Corgi Classics range, being shipped in the grey boxes for the next few years, probably up to 1986, I think there may be more colours which I have not yet found. Values for all versions are best described as modest. |
