1927 Bentley 3 Litre |
Here is a fine model of the '27 Le Mans Bentley. Corgi Toys released this casting five times. As a stand-alone model it was 9001 in green and 9002 in red; both of these with the hood up and released in 1964. The green car was a racer with a racing driver and racing numbers, correct for the 1927 Le Mans winning car as driven by Benjafield & Davies. The red car has red wheels, a driver in normal clothes and no racing numbers. Both cars were deleted in 1969
You will also see it in red in the Avengers set (GS40) paired with Mrs Peel's Lotus Élan and figures of both her and John Steed - together with three spare umbrellas. The Avengers set car has the hood folded down, plated metal wheels and has Steed in the drivers seat. I've seen the set with a green car and red wheels - but these are rare. The last version, released in 1967 and deleted in 1969, is an homage to PG Wodehouse, the 'World of Wooster' version which is green, with the hood folded down. Jeeves is at the wheel and Bertie in some natty golfing bags is standing by the car. This is not classed as a gift set but is No.9004.
In 1985 Corgi Classics, the run-on business from Corgi Toys, revived the casting for another series of vintage cars and again in 1998 to reprise the Avengers, John Steed car.
