Jaguar XJS V12 |
|
At the time of first writing this article (August 2007) I had just made my 14th crossing in the channel tunnel that year and when I pulled in to the carriage one of these came in behind me. The noise that V12 makes in an enclosed space like a train carriage is beyond wonderful. I was once given a lift in one on a blazing hot day in 1989, and it was my first experience of air conditioning in a car, very memorable. The world has moved on - in 2007 I bought a baby Citroen C1 for my kids to learn to drive, just about the cheapest car on the market - even it has air conditioning now. However one of these lovely old Jags would find a home in my dream garage.
Corgi used the Jag XJS casting over and over again under different model numbers and in gift sets.
The first release was in October 1978 as Simon Templar's car from The Return of the Saint (320) - a 1970s reboot of the 1960s Roger Moore series, this time The Saint has swapped his P1800 Volvo for a Jag XJS. It remained in the Corgi Toys catalogue until 1981. next came the civilian version in metallic red (319) released in November 1978 and deleted in 1981. In 1980 the Carlsberg Powerboat Set was released (GS38), replacing the Fiat X1/9 version of the set (GS37) deleted the same year. GS38 was deleted in 1981
The next re-issue of the Jaguar XJS is in the Supercat livery (314), made 1982 to 1983. The car is always black with a double side-stripe, seats are tan or red. In the very last month of operation, June 1983, Corgi Toys released the Motul car (318).
