Renault 16

We're in Corgi heartland here - a slightly exotic yet familiar saloon car of the day, the Renault R16 was very innovative, one of the first 5 door hatchbacks, the only competition was the Austin Maxi. So of course Corgi make a finely modelled version of the French car, using the Renault's novel features to add novel features to the toy - reclining front seats, opening hatch and lift-up parcel shelf and the under-bonnet spare wheel. Only the tow bar spoils the line of the model. If only Corgi had stuck with models like this.

260 Regular Wheels

The Renault R16 was first seen the year before in GS13 as a news camera car covering the Tour de France cycle race. No 260 is its first use as a stand-alone model and it is always burgundy metallic with cast spoked hubs and yellow seats. It was in the catalogue in this form for just 1969, being replaced by No.202; the same casting with Whizzwheels, which ran from 1970 to 1972 and is metallic blue. It's interesting to see that this example in metallic burgundy has suffered the same paint loss as the Mini, the Adams Probe and the rally Rover 2000 - all in the same colour.

GS13 Tour de France

This nice set was introduced in August 1968 and remained in the range until 1972. It shares the basic Renault 16 casting with No.260 which was the R16 car in maroon with opening front and back and reclining front seats. The stand-alone car was replaced with a blue version of the same car with Whizzwheels, No.202. However the Gift Set was never released as far as I can see with Whizzwheels, which you would sort of have expected. The set consists of the car, a cameraman on a platform and a cyclist figure on a bicycle. Sales were not great and because it is not that easy to find prices are high.

202 WhizzWheels

This is the Whizzwheels version being released a year after the original. It is not an improvement. To show which was Whizzwheels and which was not the body colour was changed from dark red to blue. One one example I had the inside of the bonnet lid was dark red and the paint chips could be seen to be ringed in dark red, so that one was sprayed dark red before it was blue. The  202 Renault R16 with WhizzWheels was released in 1970 and deleted in 1972
