The Corgi Toys Volkswagen Polo was released first in 1976 in both Orange & Green in 1:36 scale (289), it was deleted in 1980. In February 1979 the first competition version of the Polo was released (302) in gold metallic with racing number 4. Also in 1979 some export only versions of the Polo were released, Polizei (489) in green and white and 4894 ADAC in yellow with a white roof. There are two export postal versions on number 489, Swiss PTT and Deutsche Bundespost, neither of which is mentioned in the Great Book of Corgi Pocket Book. I suspect they were launched in 1979 too. In May 1982 the Polo was upgraded to a Turbo model by the addition of a rear spoiler and a new competition model (309) was released which remained in the catalogue until the closure of Mettoy. Also in 1982 as part of a special range for FW Woolworth a 'Little and Large' 2 car set was released featuring the Polo Turbo in 1:36 scale and the Corgi Juniors smaller scale car. Production continued briefly in the post-Mettoy era, as you can see below I have found three releases from 1984 The cars in the bottom two rows below came to me from an ex-employee of the Corgi factory at Northampton, they are colour trials from the pre-production phase of the car. |
