Corgi Toys 314; Ferrari Berlinetta 250 Le Mans

It was a good bet in February 1965 to assume that the new Ferrari 250 LM would be a winner come June at the 24 hours of Le Mans race, and it paid off, Ferrari were first and second with this car and third with a 275 GTB, Ferrari's sixth consecutive win. The winning car was driven by Jochen Rind and Masten Gregory. However down among the non-finishers came the future - if that makes sense - in the shape of the Ford GT40 which dominated the race for the rest of the 1960s and Ferrari never won it again.

I had one of these in my Christmas stocking when I was nine and it remained a favourite toy for the rest of my childhood despite the engine cover and eventually the roof breaking off - I still have it somewhere. It's not actually that good a replica of the real thing though - the lights are wrong and the balance & shape of the vehicle do not really work. Look up some photos on Google and see what I mean, but be honest, back in 1965 how many Ferraris did we see every day? As a Corgi toy it works very well though and I've always had a soft spot for it.

Corgi released the model in 1965 and it remained in the range until 1972. It was produced and sold in very large quantities and with no recorded variations, which as ever means prices are a little more modest. It is always red, with racing number 4 and wire wheels. If you can find a late release in a window box it will probably get a small premium.

This Corgi Toy was sourced in January 2021 from a private collection
