The 1989 24 Hours of Le Mans was the
57th Grand Prix of Endurance, and took place on 10 and 11 June 1989.
This was the last time the 24 Hours
of Le Mans ran without the two chicanes on the Mulsanne Straight which
were installed for the following year in the interest of safety. In the
1988 & 1989 races speeds approaching 250 mph (402 km/h) had been
achieved on the Mulsanne Straight and many of the drivers were concerned
their cars would not stay on the ground over the uneven surface.
There were no serious accidents this
year.
Having run his cars at Le Mans for a
decade, Peter Sauber was aided by Mercedes in winning the 1989 race. His
"Silver Arrows" Sauber C9s finished 1st, 2nd and 5th, with Porsches and
Jaguars finishing behind.
For most of the races up to the early 1980s,
where I do not have pictures of a model of the car as raced, I have shown
examples of the car where possible. For the remaining years I will only
show the cars where photos of the correct car are available.
