The 24 Hours of le Mans

For the 1956 Le Mans race, which had a capacity limit for prototypes of 2.5 litres, Antony Lago built two cars powered by Maserati 250F engines. These Maserati units had been built by Talbot under license and it was intended that they should power a new production model. Although the 1956 cars were attractively styled and endowed with a good turn of speed by the Maserati engines, the chassis design showed little advance over that of the old 4.5 litre cars. Coil spring front suspension was fitted and the frame was of twin-tubular construction, but a rigid axle and semi-elliptic springs were used at the rear. Lucas crashed the car he was sharing with Zehender, a very experienced ex-works Alfa driver, and the car handled by Jean Behra and Louis Rosier retired with rear axle trouble near the end of the race. A single example rebodied by Campana of Modena and financed by Andre Dubonnet of aperitif fame came to the start in 1957, and because of clutch trouble there it stayed! This marked the effective end of Lago-Talbot.
