Whacky or what? Matchbox were really out to get Hot Wheels' lunch here. It is so typical of the loony fantasy jobs Mattel was releasing at the time and so very successfully too. The Flying Bug, 11e, based loosely on a Volkswagen Beetle was in the range from 1972 to 1978 and is found in either red or orange. The windows are always opaque and can be grey, blue or black. The jets can be yellow or black, the pilot can be wearing a German WW1 steel helmet or a flying helmet and goggles. The bonnet sticker can be square or heart shaped.
The most common version is the one shown here in red with yellow jets and grey windows. Blue window versions are a little harder to find, but none is particularly rare.
