Matchbox/Lesney 43d; Dragon Wheels; Light green, black base, Dragon Wheels

Matchbox 1-75 Range

Funny car dragster based on the Type 1 VW, universally known as the Beetle. Funny Car is a drag racing car class. Funny cars have forward-mounted engines and carbon fibre automotive bodies over the chassis, giving them an appearance vaguely approximating manufacturers' showroom models. Worldwide many different body styles are used. These "fake" body shells are not just cosmetic: they serve an important aerodynamic purpose

This Beetle from Matchbox has a lift-up body shell which shows the works underneath, all in all it's a fun package. They are always green, some lighter and some darker, all have Dragon Wheels paper stickers on the sides, some have black bases and some are unpainted. There are no particularly rare versions but the ones with an unpainted base are harder to find and demand a reasonable premium. Production ran from 1972 to 1977.

This MBX was sourced in April 2017 from a private collection

The Boss Mustang, 44d, was released in 1972 and remained in the range until the brand crashed in 1983. For most of its production it was as you see below in yellow with a black bonnet and unpainted or silver painted base. Later releases were green with Cobra decals (US) and orange with The Boss or 5 on decals. No version attracts any premium to speak of.
