Matchbox/Lesney 51c; AEC Eight-Wheel Tipper |
This is a nice model of an eight wheel AEC Mammoth Major with a tipper back. It spanned the introduction of Superfast wheels and can be found with both types of wheels. The cab is either orange or yellow and the labels on the tipper can read 'Pointer', 'Douglas' or 'Alcon on the move'.
The 8 Wheel Tipper (51c) was introduced in 1969 and converted to Superfast in 1970. It was deleted in 1971. The hardest to find and consequently most valuable version is the promotional model with the 'Alcon on the move' stickers. Of the others keep your eyes open for white unplated radiator grilles, yellow cab with 'Douglas' stickers on the tipper and any Superfast version with an unplated base.
