Matchbox 29b; Austin A55 Cambridge
Matchbox updated their Austin
Cambridge from the A50 to the Farina bodied A55 shape in 1961 The A55
had been around since 1959 and just as Matchbox released their car BMC
launched the A60 Cambridge which softened the rather stark looks of the
A55, and made it look a bit less like a Peugeot 404. It also made the
Matchbox car out of date as soon as it was launched.
Pinin Farina designed the 404
for Peugeot and the Cambridge for BMC at the same time and it was
basically the same car with a slightly different radiator grille. I
wonder why nobody noticed?
The car remained in the
Matchbox range until 1966. It is always two-tone green. Wheels can be
grey, silver or black, the black wheels having smooth or knobbly treads.
The windows are clear or tinted green. Best price according to Ramsay is
the one with grey plastic wheels and green tinted windows. |
