Matchbox/Lesney 73e; Ford Model A Coupe |
The Ford Model A Coupe marked a bit of a departure for Lesney. Up to now everything had been contemporary, anything historic was dealt with through the Models of Yesteryear brand where most of the cars were around 1:43 scale. Here we have a 1931 Model A Ford in a scale slightly larger than the usual 1-75 range but still smaller than MOY.
It was introduced into the range in 1979 and was still there when the brand collapsed in 1983. The new owners continued to turn out new versions for some years to come. During its Lesney period is managed to lose the wing mounted spare wheel and some of the post-Lesney versions have a distinct Hot Rod feel with oversize wheels on the back.
The first releases were cream and later white with dark green wings, some of these have glass, some do not and it was during this period that the spare wheel went missing. Next we have the two-tone green from 1980-1982, the final Lesney version being two-tone brown. None is particularly rare and there are only small variations in value.
