Matchbox/Lesney 75a; Ford Thunderbird

Matchbox 1-75 Range

I remember a completely pointless argument in the playground at Lowick CE School. I'd be about 6 and the other kid 5, another Andrew, who according to Friends Re-United is now living in New York with a cabaret singer (when I first wrote this in 1996), which I do not believe. I had one of these and he had a Husky T'Bird which was of course a later model, 1961 I think, this being the 1959 model. He would not have it that mine was a Thunderbird as his was a Ford Thunderbird and looked nothing like mine. If his was a Thunderbird mine could not be. I must have been pretty wound up to still remember the argument more than 60 years later.

The Ford Thunderbird, 75a, was released in 1960 and remained in the range until 1965. They all have this same pink/white body colour combination. The variations are in base and wheel colour. Wheels are always plastic and can be grey, silver or smooth black. The base can be blue, dark blue, blue-green or black.

One of my pictured examples is silver plastic wheels, dark blue base which is sort of middle of the road in the rarity scale. Commonest is black base with silver wheels, rarer ones have the lighter blue or the blue-green base with silver wheels, black wheels versions are the most sought after.
