Matchbox 22d; Freeman Intercity Commuter Here is a futuristic view of road transport as seen from 1970, actually it's not that far out if you compare it to the later Renault Espace and the Chrysler Voyager. The Matchbox Freeman Inter-city Commuter was released at 22d in 1970 and remained in production up to 1975. It is seen in metallic purple (1970/71), metallic gold (1971/72), and metallic red (1972/75). It is the gold one you should look for as it is the most scarce. When I updated this page in 2021 I did some desultory searching for the Freeman Inter-City Commuter on the internet and as you may guess this ultra-common Matchbox was all I could find - ironically when I Googled 'Freeman Intercity Commuter' this page came up first, which did not help me at all. I wondered if it was actually a concept MPV produced at the time. Another curious fact is that this is the most frequently visited Matchbox page on this site by a massive amount, yet the bounce rate is almost 100%. This means that the page is being returned by search engines all the time - but is rarely what the person searching was looking for. I wonder what people are actually looking for when the Freeman Inter-City Commuter turns up? * Further to the above, a visitor to this website has pointed me to this article: http://autoshite.com/topic/3015-you-learn-something-every-day/. (NB. the page at the end of this link is dated 2009 and all the photos have been removed, but the text was still there in September 2024) apparently the car was never made, it was the winner of a car of the future design competition in the Daily Telegraph Magazine in 1965, the designer of this car was called Freeman. |
