Matchbox/Lesney 63d; Freeway Gas Tanker |
This little tanker was in production for the best part of ten years and is found in at least 19 variations - probably a lot more. So to add to the confusion caused by kids swapping around cabs and trailers in toyboxes, there are a bewildering number of variants - even when you have got the right bits hooked up together. Matchbox must have made millions of these and the commonly found Burmah and Chevron versions are worth very little. However a few rarities are worth getting hold of. You may also see it in a twin-pack set with a matching trailer.
The Freeway Gas Tanker (63d) went into production in 1973 and remained in the range until 1982. The prize to look out for in all the variants is the military green one, worth good money with French flags and a lot of money with Canadian flags, less with 'High Octane' labels. Castrol or Aral labels will also get a fair premium - but seriously, there are so many variants you should consult a guide such as Ramsay to get a proper value.
