Matchbox 40c; Hay Trailer
This simple four wheel farm
trailer had a very long life in the Matchbox range. It was first made in
1967 when it was yellow with black plastic regular wheels. Later on the
wheels were changed to yellow plastic hubs with black plastic tyres (it
never got Superfast wheels) and the paintwork was changed to blue. It is
also seen in light blue, red & beige - these being from twin packs and
gift sets. The trailer was withdrawn from the core Lesney range in 1972
but was still being produced in twin packs right into
the 1980s.
It was made in millions over a
period of fifteen years so is never ever going to be scarce or valuable,
nor is it a must-have design. That said all the many examples that have
come my way in mixed lots off eBay have always been very heavily
playworn, so the kids must have liked it.
The trailer should have plastic
clip-on extensions front and rear designed to help it carry more hay,
these are called raves or shelvings. |
