Matchbox 5g/5h; Jeep - US Mail & 4x4 Off-Road
It is a slightly dull and
useless piece of trivia that US Mail delivery vehicles were right hand
drive (like this one) so that the driver was next to the kerb when he
got out, I also thought they mostly used purpose built vans like the Hot
Wheels Grumman mail van but it seems Jeeps were used too..
These are usually blue
(lots of different shades) with either a black or white tilt or white
with a white tilt, there does not seem to be a rare version.
The casting was also used
in a Gliding Club twin pack set with a glider trailer, obviously. The
gliding club version is red or yellow with a sticker on the bonnet
reading 'Gliding Club'. The yellow one has either a black or white base
and the white base is harder to find and worth a little more. The red
one is very hard to find and very valuable as a result. The Gliding Club
Jeeps still have 'US Mail Truck' cast into the base plate.
The US Mail Truck No.5g
was made from 1979 to 1982.
The second Jeep on this
page is 5h '4x4 Jeep Off Road', my main grid on the Matchbox front page
does not have enough columns to give it an icon of it's own, so it is
sharing here. It was introduced into the Lesney range in 1982 and was
still in production when the company crashed in 1983, It was released
only in metallic bronze. |
