Matchbox/Lesney 64b; MG 1100

Matchbox 1-75 Range
This is a transitional model that was first a regular wheels Lesney, converted to Superfast and lives on in the post Lesney era

Its interesting that Matchbox chose the less often seen MG version of the BMC ADO16, rather than the ubiquitous Austin and Morris versions, there were Riley and Van Den Plas finishes in this car too and when the MKII came along a generic 'GT' in orange. I always underrated it at the time but with hindsight this was an innovative, cutting edge car - it's just such a shame it looked like a slightly squashed A40 and not a bit more in line with its technological reality.

The Matchbox model was added to the range in 1966 coloured green with black plastic wheels and was I think the first small scale die cast to feature an open window with a dog poking its head out. The Mercury Commuter station wagon got a pair of dogs looking out the back, reprised on a recent Mattel Matchbox car and I have a Hot Wheels Mercedes 380SEL with a dog looking out of the side - all these seem to me nodding to the old Lesney MG. In 1970 the colour was changed to metallic blue and the wheels updated to Superfast. The only really rare one is the Superfast wheels on the old green body. However all the Superfasts are quite well priced as it was only made for a short time being deleted in 1971.
