Matchbox/Lesney 62c; Mercury Cougar |
Matchbox brought out the very good little model of the original Mercury Cougar in 1968 with regular wheels, chrome hubs and black plastic tyres. The production version was metallic lime green with a red interior, but pre-production prototypes in cream are known and sell for many thousands of pounds. The green ones are much more modestly valued.
In 1970 the car was upgraded very briefly to Superfast wheels before being converted to a dragster the following year (62d). In Superfast form you will find it in the same lime metallic as the regular wheels version and a metallic yellow/green sometimes referred to as gold or lime gold. Because the Superfast version was produced for such a brief period of time it is the harder to find and more valuable version. To my mind this is a very nicely modelled and successful die-cast, it is one I like a lot.
