Matchbox/Lesney 59d; Mercury Fire Chief

Matchbox 1-75 Range

This model of a 1969 Mercury Monterey Fire Chief car had a very long production life indeed. It was first brought into the range in 1971 and remained in the core 1-75 range until 1974 when it was replaced by the Planet Scout. However it was re-released many times right through until 1982 as both a Fire Chief car and latterly as a Police car. The core 1-75 models are easily distinguishable because they have two men in the front. The later re-releases have no men inside. It is closely related to No. 73c the Mercury Commuter - which is the station wagon version of the same car. Most of the cars have both number 59 and 73 stamped on the base.

There are 14 different versions of the car listed in Ramsay and I'm sure that there are more out there. No versions attract a significant premium but of the core versions with the two men inside look for a 'Fire Chief' label on the bonnet combined with shield labels on the doors. Of the later re-releases the Police versions tend to be harder to find and worth a little more. However as always with the multi-version models you are best to consult one of the price guides.
