Matchbox/Lesney 74a; Mobile Canteen Trailer |
I always thought this was a fun model when I was a kid. Some of my mates had it though I never did. You could tow it behind anything with a hook and the side opened to reveal a detailed kitchen inside. You can find this (if you are lucky) in a range of versions. It can be silver, white cream or a pinky cream. Wheels can be grey, silver or black and the base can be one of several shades of blue, light, mid, dark, turquoise and sea green.
The Mobile Canteen, 74a, was added to the range in 1959 and remained there until 1966 which long service probably accounts for the range of finishes in which it is seen. Some of them are very scarce and very valuable. The most commonly found is silver with silver wheels and a mid-blue base, however the same version with knobbly black wheels is one of the rarest and could fetch four figures on a good day. White, pink and cream are all to be looked out for as are turquoise and dark blue bases. However this is one where you should snap up a bargain and check the references when you get home!
