Matchbox 15d; Volkswagen 1500 Beetle

The transition model at number 15d is the Volkswagen Beetle rally car. The car is a Type 1 Volkswagen 1500 sedan. When it was released as a regular wheels version in 1968 it had the regular wheels plated hubs with plastic tyres. In 1969 it was converted to Superfast wheels.

Versions to watch for are regular wheels versions with decals rather than stickers on the doors and a code 3 version produced in the US which has the car with the decals from the Herbie car from the Love Bug movie. On the Superfast version there is no particular premium model to go for, but the white Superfast car below is unusual in that the box has the illustration showing the regular wheels car with the Superfast logo printed in red.
