Good model of the Type three VW, This was never a pretty motor car, in life and as a model it is an ugly pug. However this is as nice a model as it is possible to make from it, compare it to the unfortunate Dinky version. Well done you boys at Lesney.
The car was released in 1967 into the regular wheels range with red bodywork and there are two kinds of wheels found at this stage, either black plastic wheels with chrome hubcaps or chrome wheel hubs with black plastic tyres. The former being slightly scarcer and worth a little more. There is also a version from a gift set with a roof-rack and luggage which will also get a premium. The very rare and quite valuable regular wheels one has the later purple body from the Superfast release on regular wheels. In 1970 the car was converted to Superfast and remained in the range until 1972. Among the Superfast versions look for red bodywork from the regular wheels version, these will get a good premium. It is also found in shades of metallic purple and metallic pink, none of these is particularly rare. However a pre-pro prototype is known in metallic dark blue and these are seriously expensive.
