Models of Yesteryear is one of the most difficult areas of die-cast collecting. Values for most of these have dropped through the floor to the extent that my default answer when presented with a Models of Yesteryear collection to buy is politely to decline. Some of the very early models have retained some value but most of them have not, rarity counts for nothing (mostly), some of the most recent releases under the Matchbox Collectables brand have good prices, but the majority of core range vintage and veteran cars and vans are now effectively worthless.

I guess at the time they were new they were very widely bought by collectors rather than being given to children as toys and the attrition through play which affects most other old die-casts just did not happen to the same extent. Hence mint in box items are very easy to find. The quality of the modelling is frequently poor when compared to modern diecasts and they lack the charm of say an early Dinky Toy.

However the serendipity that goes with die-cast collecting is just as prevalent here. I found a Simplex in a mixed lot of playworn cars off eBay that I've never seen listed anywhere, and turned out to be a pre-production prototype which I sold for a lot of money. The odd item in a collectors lot at an auction turns out to be an overlooked rarity or an interesting code 3, and there is the simple joy of learning as you find out more about these interesting old cars from the dawn of motoring.
